Jeff Stelling forced to apologise after Paul Merson crunches on Sweet Chilli crisps in background on Soccer Saturday

Jeff Stelling apologizes to Sky Sports viewers after Paul Merson was heard chewing his Crisp Live on Air.

Presenter Stelling, 66, was still reading the half-time score when he was distracted by his colleague Merson.

While the half-time score was being read, Paul Merson entered a pack of crisps

Viewers could hear rustles in the background, and Stelling revealed that this was Merson tucking into a snack.

Stelling said: “The noise you could hear in the background was the crunch of Paul Merson’s sweet pepper and black pepper.

“You can see on the desk in front of him that it’s not just one packet, there are two!

“And before we got on the air, Merson said ‘I’m on a diet from now on’.

“Okay, that’s a New Year’s resolution that went really well! Just before 4 p.m. on New Year’s Day and it’s caput!”

This isn’t the first time Merson has interrupted eating crisps this season.

He did so in November – again when the half-time score was being read, and Stelling called him out for it.

Stelling held the packet of Proper Chips in front of the camera, and joked: “You must have heard some interference as we were going on the commercial break and I was finishing with the score… and that’s why.

“They were in the hands of Paul Merson at the time – he was eating his crisps.

“And do you know what’s the worst thing about it? Look, those are BBQ lentils!

“What happened to the salt and vinegar for goodness sake! What kind of man are you these days?”
