Melrose began his hockey career as a defenseman in the WCHL in 1974 with the Kamloops Chiefs, where he stayed for two years. He began the 1976–77 season with the Springfield Indians of the AHL, before moving mid-season to the WHA’s Cincinnati Stingers, where he remained until 1979.
After the demise of the WHA and some subsequent teams joining the NHL, Melrose joined the Winnipeg Jets for the 1979–80 season.[2]
