Romelu Lukaku’s header secured a crucial win for the Blues at Stamford Bridge.
But Danny Welbeck had the final say as he came off the bench of late to equalize with Siegel.
However, there was a tasteless moment in the game that involved Chelsea fan favorite Rudiger.
The 28-year-old defender had to react quickly when Brighton wing-back Tariq Lamptey started on one of his lightning-quick runs below the touchline.
Former Chelsea academy starlet Marcos looked set to move towards goal after getting the better of Alonso.
But Rudiger had other ideas as he came back from his central position.

The German advanced with both feet as Lamptey attempted a burst of speed to break clear.
And Rudiger completely eliminated his opponent, making contact to put the ball out of play.
Incredibly, no action was taken against the veteran defender.
But football fans on Twitter were unhappy with the decision.
One declared: “The Rudiger attack was the clearest red ever.”
Another said: “Just saw that Rudiger has never seen an obvious red card in football.”
One observed: “How Chelsea get away with foul after foul, and 100 percent that the Rudiger challenge is a red.”
Another added: “Rudiger was a weirdo. Tremendous red.”

With his deal over the summer, Rudiger may not be around for long to make similar tackles for Chelsea.
Players like Real Madrid and Manchester United are interested in drafting him as a free agent.
But Chelsea are refusing to give up hope of a new contract even as the two sides move away in talks.
