Paul Merson has added fuel to the fire at Manchester United by claiming that Ralph Rangnik should leave Cristiano Ronaldo.

It comes after the 36-year-old Ronaldo, who faced criticism for both his performance and attitude in the draw with Newcastle last week.

The Portuguese captain also lost a sitter against Burnley on Thursday night, which he would usually bury.

And Merson, 53, a former England and Arsenal playwright, believes ‘something is not right’ at the Old Trafford camp.

Merson spoke to Sportskeeda and said: “You don’t know what you’re going to get with Manchester United.

“They were very lucky against Norwich City and could never beat Newcastle United away from home, so it will be a tough game for them once again.

“I don’t see them finishing in the top four.

“Manchester United are still a long way off and if they get to fourth place somehow, it will be a great season for them.

“In terms of his team, I firmly believe that Cristiano Ronaldo should be dropped from the team.

“It won’t happen, but Edinson Cavani should take his place with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood to play on the wings.

“Something’s not right there. I think there’s a lot going on behind the scenes and it doesn’t look good for them.”

Ronaldo himself took to Instagram at the end of the year to talk about the club’s current status among the Premier League elite.

He said: “I am not happy with what I am achieving in Man Utd. Neither of us is happy, I am sure of that.

“We know we have to work harder, play better and do better than we are doing now.

“Let’s make this New Year’s Eve a turning point of the season! Let’s embrace 2022 with a high spirit and a strong mindset.

“Let’s take us above and beyond, reach for the stars and keep this club where it belongs! Join us, we’re counting on you all!”

Sixth-placed Man Utd will face eighth-placed Wolves on Monday night in the Premier League.
