Phil Foden was partying again in the new year after firing Manchester City by a massive eight points at the top of the league.

England international Foden was reinstated in the starting line-up by boss Pep Guardiola after being dropped for his team’s last two matches.

The 21-year-old forward was caught working too hard with teammate Jack Grealish after a 7-0 win against Leeds two weeks ago.

But he showed he had learned his lesson with a winning goal against injury-ravaged Brentford and prepared to lead City on their way to a tenth consecutive Premier League victory.

The last two times they finished the year at the top of the table in 2011 and 2017, they won the title.

And the defending champions are now the bookies’ favorites to retain their crown after this latest win.

Guardiola could have risked retreating to Brentford striker Ivan Toni with a first-half seal on Fernandinho.

The two clashed seconds earlier, with Tony standing on the clearly grounded city captain’s outstretched leg.

But when VAR ruled that no further action was necessary, referee David Coot allowed Tony to escape without punishment.
