Newcastle are set to turn their attention to Flamengo star Gabriel Barbosa after failing to land Darwin Nunez.
The mega-rich Magpies were expecting Benfica striker Nunez to reopen with the transfer window next month.
But the Portuguese side have denied Newcastle’s progress and are refusing to sell.
Now The Mirror reports new boss Eddie Howe is looking at Brazilian forward Barbosa, known as Gabigol, to fire much-needed firepower into his relegation-threatened side.
The 25-year-old is a huge talent in South American football and lifted the 2019 Copa Libertadores.
Flamengo is said to be open for loan in January if it includes an obligation to buy Newcastle next summer to avoid a fall.
Howe’s side are currently ranked 19th in the Premier League – two points from safety.
Any permanent move is likely to cost Saudi-owned Toon something in the region of £17million.

Gabigol flopped at Inter Milan in 2019 before moving to Flamengo on loan.
He is dating Rafaela Santos, sister of fellow Brazil international Neymar.
The pair were first seen together in London in May 2017.
Neymar later fueled rumors of a rift when he posted a photo that showed his face covered after news of the breakup of Gabigol’s relationship.
