Newcastle 'launch official Kieran Trippier transfer bid as they thrash out relegation clause with Atletico Madrid star'

According to reports, Newcastle have submitted the official bid for England international Kieran Trippier.

The Magpies are waist-deep in a relegation fight and desperately need players through the door in the January transfer window.

And according to Sky Sports, he has now made a formal bid with Atletico Madrid.

This comes after The Athletic reported that Newcastle were confident they could sign Trippier.

Newcastle have a joint-worst defense in the Premier League and strengthening the backline is one of boss Eddie Howe’s top priorities.

The 31-year-old will join on a permanent basis but should leave Newcastle at second tier, ‘both sides want to defend themselves’.

Trippier – who had previously played in love for Burnley and Tottenham – may not be ready to play championship football if the Magpies fail to stay afloat and a relegation release clause could be inserted in his contract.

However, Newcastle may face stiff competition from Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been interested in Trippier for some time and have even started bids to sign him over the summer.

Trippier will provide good cover for first-team right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

And United could offer Champions League football in the 2021-22 season.

Trippier’s high energy would fit nicely into the over-pressed style of new boss Ralph Rangnick.

There are also reports now that Chelsea would be interested in a full-back amid an injury crisis at Stamford Bridge.
