Super-agent Jorge Mendes wanted Joao Felix to join Manchester City before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2019 for £113m.
SunSport revealed in May of the same year that talks had taken place between Mendes and members of the Etihad hierarchy.
Our story is now confirmed after excerpts from a leaked conversation between Felix’s representative and Benfica director Bruno Maruta were published in Portugal.
On the recording Mendes can be heard saying: “The president of Benfica insisted that I bring him an offer of €120 million and I already have four.
“The best thing for Joao Felix will be Manchester City.
“This will be the most expensive transfer in Portuguese football.”
Felix left Benfica for Atletico that summer, while City made the leap for midfielder Rodri and defender Joo Cancello.
The Portuguese forward has had a mixed fortune during his three years in Madrid, showing glimpses of his incredible potential.
