United’s squad that day included outcasts Phil Jones and Dan James and Andreas Pereira.

Brandon Williams – now on loan at Prem Cannon Fodder Norwich – played left-back.

Nemanja Matic played with Fred at the base of midfield and Juan Mata was to the right of an attacking trio behind ousted star Anthony Martial.

And it was labeled the ‘worst team in 30 years’ by pundit Peter Crouch.

Ben Mee was Man of the Match as goals from Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez, Sean Dyche’s men on either side of half-time, went for all three points.

It was the first time the Clarets won at Old Trafford since 1962 and home fans were not impressed.

United were knocked out at half-time as it was the third consecutive season that Burnley went 2–0 at Old Trafford.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer demanded more after the final whistle.

He said: “There are a lot of thoughts running through my mind.

“At one point it felt like we were making openings and didn’t take them.

“Now, it’s one of disappointment. We put our hands up, it’s not good enough.

“The players are giving everything, they’ve done absolutely great this season so far but they know it wasn’t good enough tonight.

“The boys they seemed mentally exhausted at the end, we didn’t get that creativity.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. You feel privileged when you’re in Man Utd because you’re playing for the best club in the world.

“Sometimes you go through periods like this and it’s a test I’m sure they’re going to come through.”

Crouch said: “Look at the options on the bench. It’s miles from it.

“I don’t know what a Manchester United player is now.

“Most of the players that Manchester United have bought over the past five years have gone backwards.”
