‘Get on with it’ – Gary Neville demands Premier League clubs stop postponing games due to Covid and just play youngsters


Manchester United legend Gary Neville has called on Premier League teams to “move with it” and postpone games due to COVID-19.

A total of 15 love matches have been canceled so far this month alone due to the rising cases due to the Omicron variant, leaving the list of fixtures in disarray.

This comes after the Premier League confirmed that a record 103 tests came back positive from 20-26 December.

In the top flight the rules state that clubs are required to complete their fixtures if they have at least 13 outfield players and one goalkeeper available within their squad.

And Neville believes there is “no way” those teams don’t have enough players to complete a team.

The Sky Sports pundit also urged the clubs to have faith in their young talents, who are yearning for an opportunity in the top flight.

“We’ve seen in PL when teams’ requests are denied they play near full strength line ups.

“The time has come for clubs to go ahead with this and rely on their young players unless in exceptional circumstances.”

Neville’s tweet received a great response, with more than 600 retweets and nearly 7,000 likes, as well as mixed comments.

This fan wrote: “But doesn’t that make the league so much less competitive?”

Another posted: “Spot on. Teams using this [as] An excuse, ridiculous, with just one positive case.”

And a third said: “The big clubs have spent a decade and £100s collecting the best young players, curtailing their careers and depriving the EFL of talent.

“Now is their moment. Play them. Or what’s the matter?”
