From Cristiano Ronaldo belter to Champions League wonderstrike, SunSport's Dave Kidd picks the best goals he's ever seen

There are rare occasions when a target is so amazing that the old hacks experienced in the press box, without allegiance to either side, get out of their seats or just stare at each other and yell ‘**** me!’

Bernardo Silva’s strike against Aston Villa earlier this month was one of them.

What Really Makes a Great Goal? A belting thunderbolt, a single dribble, a beautifully constructed team effort?

Well, Silva is the best out there I’ve seen first-hand, as the left-foot thumping was great, without the excellent end-to-end teamwork that preceded it.

Here’s a list of the best seven I’ve ever seen in the body, in reverse order—a random mix, off the top of my head, because these are the only goals I’ve been at and those are the ones I’ve had. resides in the mind.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United v Fulham, Premier League, 2007)

Fourteen years later, Ronaldo is banging him up for United again, but he doesn’t score goals like this late winner anymore.

The young Portuguese collects the ball in his half, presses on fuel injection, gallops past a Fulham player and hits another barrier below the left touchline, then cuts between two more defenders and into the far corner. Drills in the lower part of the house.

It was a key goal in United’s title-winning campaign and a harbinger of Ronaldo’s rise to potential GOAT status at Real Madrid.

Matt Taylor (Portsmouth v Everton, Premier League, 2006)

There is a 50-50 tackle in the center circle, the ball goes uphill and Pompey midfielder Matt Taylor belts a left-footed volley from 40 yards that lifts and dips at a rollercoaster angle, allowing Everton keeper Tim Howard to hit the ball. Placed on his six. -yard line.

Fratton Park is a magnificent, sparse, old-school din’s palace. The goal was met with a split-second of pin-drop silence, as the minds of the crowd caught sight of the place before descending into bedlam.

David Dunn (England Under-21s v Holland, European Championship Play-off, 2001)

The only goal on this list you can’t Google was scored by young Blackburn midfielder Dunn in Utrecht – a diagonal dribble that starts somewhere near the intersection of the half line and touchline.

As Dunn stuns the entire Dutch team before slotting home, the Maracana has shades of John Barnes or the Azteca have Diego Maradona – and The Sun’s back-page headline read ‘Maraduna’ the next day.

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United v Manchester City, Premier League, 2011)

This astonishing bicycle kick is probably the most famous goal on this list and a hugely important goal in the Manchester derby as the city’s ‘noisy neighbours’ began to challenge for supremacy.

Rooney had issued a transfer request to be forced to move to City earlier in the season, but after being handed a new contract he stalled and won the Derby 2–1 with this acrobatic overhead effort – probably his 253. Best of combined goals – from a granny cross.

Some say he ‘shined’ it. Those of us who were there say ‘Who cares?’

Pajatim Qasmi (Fulham v Crystal Palace, Premier League, 2013)

It’s the only goal on the list I paid to see – I was on the far end at Selhurst Park – but despite my allegiance, the game can’t be too prejudicial as it was nominated for FIFA’s Puskas Award . Worldwide goal of the year.

Right-back Sasha Reither made a high pass under the right wing, Swiss winger Qasmi scored a diagonal run into the corner of the box, chest down and a volley into the far corner of the net, with elements of Marco van Basten’s masterpiece 1988 Euro Final.

Qasmi was not that good, and only scored three times for Fulham, but he will always be remembered for that. Even though the season ended in relegation.

Bernardo Silva (Manchester City v Aston Villa, Premier League, 2021)

The move begins with Riyad Mahrez, with a back to back goal in the City penalty box, to avoid danger with a clever backheel for Fernandinho, who picks up Gabriel Jesus with a visionary long pass. .

The Brazilian forward unmarked Bernardo Silva in the center and delivered a sweet cross with a left-footed volley that crashed first off Bernardo.

What a move, what a strike – Pep Guardiola was so obsessed with this goal that he burst into laughter on the bench.

Mario Mandzukic (Juventus v Real Madrid, Champions League Final, 2017)

Best goal I’ve ever seen live – again this combines those elements of excellent teamwork followed by a Croatian better known as a striker than a beauties scorer rather than a target person Is.

A crossfield ball is played outside the Juve defense and three more players touch the ball before it next hits the ground, behind the real net.

Alex Sandro, on the left-hand side of the penalty area, volleys a cross to Gonzalo Higuain, who lowers the chest and passes Manjukic, to the goal, who controls it with his chest and an overhead kick. Executes that beat Keeler Navas and finds the top corner of the net for a brilliant equalizer.

If Juventus had not lost this final 4-1 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, it would have been better remembered for that ultimate gem.
