Vertonghen’s incident came five minutes into the second half of the clash between bitter Portuguese rivals Benfica and Porto.

But the 34-year-old still managed to complete the full 90 minutes despite his unfortunate accident.

Vertonghen’s bravery failed to pay off, although Benfica were beaten 3–1, losing to league leaders Porto in the primary Liga title race.

And he wouldn’t be thanking the cameraman when he was emptying his insides on the pitch after an incredibly close-up shot.

However, this is not the first time a defender has become physically ill during action.

He had previously vomited on the pitch after being pushed to the limit in extreme heat during a 2014 World Cup game for Belgium in Brazil.

Vertonghen is in his second season with Portuguese outfit Benfica, having left Spurs in the summer of 2020 at the end of his contract.

He has established himself as a key figure at the club, starting all but two league games in this campaign and every Champions League group stage outing.

Vertonghen helped Benfica progress to the Champions League last-sixteen in a group that includes both Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

A home win against Barca and a point at the Nou Camp saw Benfica progress to second place behind Bayern at the expense of the Spaniards.

This is the first time the La Liga giants have been knocked out of the Champions League group stage since 2000.

And Vertonghen will be hoping he can avoid another backlash when he comes against former club Ajax in the last-sixteen.

He played more than 200 times for the Dutch outfit before joining Spurs in 2012.
