He was previously asked to cover while playing for both the national team and club side Guangzhou FC.

The General Administration of Sports of China (GAS) published a statement, titled ‘Suggestions to Strengthen the Management of Football Players’.

It has been said that the Chinese Football Association will set disciplinary requirements for national team players.

“National teams at all levels will strictly implement the relevant requirements of management measures … (and) fully reflect the positive spirit of Chinese football players and set a good example for society,” it said.

“National team and U23 national team athletes are strictly forbidden to have new tattoos, and those who already have tattoos are advised to remove them themselves.

“If there are special circumstances agreed upon by the team, [players] Tattoos should be covered during training and matches.”

It also said that the recruitment of tattooed players was “strictly prohibited” for teams at the Under-20 level and below.

The GAS said that national teams should organize “ideological and political education activities” that “strengthen the patriotic education” of the players.

Doing so would ‘increase a sense of mission, responsibility and respect, and create a national team that is capable of winning and fighting well and with an excellent style of play’.

The China national team has failed to qualify for a World Cup final since making its debut in 2002 and Qatar is set to miss out on 2022.
