The Telegraph is suggesting that Barkley is set to return to Goodison Park as a tentative move for the second half of the season.

The 28-year-old left Merseyside for Stamford Bridge in January 2018 in a deal worth £15 million.

He came through the start of his blues career to become a first team regular at West London.

But the attacking midfielder was sent on loan to Aston Villa last season and Thomas Tuchel’s side have seen his chances of a comeback limited.

He has made his Premier League debut only once, having been dependent on the Carabao Cup and Champions League group stage for minutes.

Tuchel will assess his midfield options before approving any loan move.

The Germans have repeatedly expressed concern over the toll Covid and the list of packed festivities is taking on their squad.

But with the likes of Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic above him in the pecking order, Barkley appears to be surplus to requirements.

The Liverpool-born star joined Everton’s youth set-up at the age of 11.

He made 179 appearances for the club before leaving for the capital.
